Tiger Woods chastises Phil Mickelson for his Saudi viewpoint

Tiger Woods chastises Phil Mickelson for his Saudi viewpoint

TULSA, Okla. — Tiger Woods is all about majors and legacy, a point he drove home Tuesday in a sharp rebuke of Phil Mickelson and his support of a Saudi-funded golf venture that led to Lefty not defending his title at the PGA Championship.

Even as Woods resumes a remarkable return from a car crash 15 months ago that nearly led to his right leg being amputated, the PGA Championship cannot escape the absence of Mickelson and speculation about who might sign up for Greg Norman’s new Saudi-backed golf series.

Phil Mickelson

Woods said he has not tried to reach out to Mickelson since his self-imposed hiatus from golf three months ago, mainly because of their difference of opinion on how golf should be run.

“I understand different viewpoints, but I believe in legacies. I believe in major championships. I believe in big events, comparisons to historical figures of the past,” Woods said.

“There’s plenty of money out here,” he said. “The tour is growing. But it’s just like any other sport — it’s like tennis — you have to go out there and earn it. You’ve got to go out there and play for it. We have opportunity to go ahead and do it. It’s just not guaranteed up front.”

That was a reference to some of the Public Investment Fund money out of Saudi Arabia being offered to players to join Norman and his LIV Golf Investments. According to various reports out of Britain, some top players were being offered more than the $120 million Woods has made in career PGA Tour earnings.

Phil Mickelson

Mickelson showed his hand in two interviews published in February. He accused the PGA Tour of “obnoxious greed” while playing in Saudi Arabia, and more incendiary comments followed when Alan Shipnuck published an excerpt of his unauthorized biography on Mickelson.

Mickelson said the Saudis were “scary mother-(expletives) to get involved with,” and then dismissed its human rights atrocities — such as the killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi — by saying it was worth it to gain leverage to make changes on the PGA Tour.

He also said he didn’t care if the Saudi league failed, as long as the tour made changes he wanted.

Mickelson decided last Friday he would not play at Southern Hills, missing out on a chance to be celebrated for his historic win last year at Kiawah Island when at age 50 he became golf’s oldest major champion.

He is the first PGA champion not to defend since Woods was recovering from knee surgery in 2008 and skipped Oakland Hills.

“It’s always disappointing when the defending champion is not here,” Woods said. “Phil has said some things that I think a lot of us who are committed to the tour and committed to the legacy of the tour have pushed back against, and he’s taken some personal time, and we all understand that. But I think that some of his views on how the tour could be run, should be run, been a lot of disagreement there.”

Phil Mickelson

“He’s just taking his time and we all wish him the best when he comes back.”

Woods, meanwhile, is back and more optimistic than he was a month ago at the Masters. He said those who are close to him were thrilled to see him walk all 72 holes at Augusta National, his first time walking while competing since the Feb. 23, 2021, accident in Los Angeles that shattered bones in his right leg and ankle.

All he could think about the day after was a bad putting week that led to a 78-78 weekend.

“I did not see it that way Monday,” he said. “I was a little ticked I didn’t putt well, and felt like I was hitting it good enough and I wish I had the stamina.”

He said the Monday after the Masters was a tough day of recovery, and then he went right back to work trying to gain strength and endurance.

“It’s better than the last time I played a tournament, which is good,” Woods said.

He is the defending PGA champion at Southern Hills, having won by two shots in 2007 for his 13th of what is now 15 majors. And he barely recognized the course after a restoration project that brought back a few meandering creeks and returned the edges of the putting surfaces so they funnel shots away from the green.

Phil Mickelson

The bigger challenge is the players he is trying to beat, which make up the strongest field of the majors. Woods is 46, and Mickelson showed a year ago that age is only a number. However, Mickelson had been playing a full schedule all along. Woods, with his injuries, would appear to be limited to the four majors this year at most.

One help is the nature of the walk. Augusta National is among the toughest in golf. Southern Hills features a sharp drop from the first and 10th tees and tough climb at the end of each nine. Otherwise, it’s a relatively gentle stroll.

“Figured the first mountain you climbed was Everest. That’s the steepest golf course you’re going to play and that was the first one you climbed, and climbed it,” Woods said. “It’s going to get flatter and better.”

Phil Mickelson

He still struggles on certain days. He said it’s never as easy as it might look.

“But I feel like I’m doing better,” he said. “I’m having more days which are better, more positive.”

Jennifer Aniston Allegedly Reunited With Brad Pitt, Staying In Same Penthouse In Paris, Various Rumors Say

Last month, Woman’s Day reported Jennifer Aniston was having secret meetups with her ex-husband Brad Pitt while in Paris to film Murder Mystery 2. But sources said their reunion hadn’t quite developed into a romance yet. Aniston was apparently lending Pitt a shoulder to cry on as he dealt with real-estate issues related to his separation from Angelina Jolie. “He’s in France to sort out the never-ending issues with his ex, over the country wine chateau they once jointly owned,” an insider revealed. “It’s really wearing Brad down, and he’s leaning hard on Jen. She can’t bear seeing him upset like this.”

Jennifer Aniston

We couldn’t say for sure if Aniston and Pitt met up in Paris, but we noticed a few holes in the outlet’s story. First of all, the magazine referred to Pitt as Aniston’s “on-again, off-again ex.” And since, as far as we know, Aniston and Pitt were never on again after their divorce in 2005, it was an inaccuracy worth noting. Then, of course, we were left wanting in the proof department. While the tabloid insisted Aniston and Pitt were talking again, it didn’t have any evidence of these alleged meetups.

Jennifer Aniston Spotted At Dinner With Brad Pitt?
Then, Woman’s Day returned with more tales of Aniston and Pitt’s Parisian adventures. Apparently, the former spouses met up for lunch to discuss Aniston rejoining Pitt’s Plan B production company. But there’s just no stopping Aniston and Pitt’s chemistry, so the meal reportedly stretched on into the late evening hours. “Jen and Brad are a creative team, always were,” an insider dishes. “It’s been liberating teaming up again on new movie projects so it’s no surprise that having lunch did carry on into the evening.”

While we’d love to get a peek into this alleged dinner date, we were wondering when it could have actually happened. Paparazzi hounded Pitt throughout his trip and even caught him going out to dinner with a friend here and there. But, from what we can tell, Aniston never attended any of those get-togethers. Not to mention, we couldn’t find any indication that Aniston is interested in rejoining the production company she left behind over 15 years ago.

Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston In The Same Suite?
Then In Touch delivered the shocking development that Aniston and Pitt had actually been living together in Paris. “It’s no coincidence that Brad and Jen are both in Paris at the same time,” an insider dished. “The pair have rekindled their romance… They’ve been holed up in the $25,000-a-night penthouse at the Four Seasons George V for months.”

Jennifer Aniston

But this is where the cracks in this Aniston-Pitt Parisian fairytale really started to show. We knew Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston hadn’t been living together in Paris for months because Aniston was staying in Hawaii as late as February. The outlet also didn’t seem to care that Aniston was in France for work and likely wasn’t using the trip to rekindle things with her ex-husband. With Pitt and Aniston, we never want to say never, but it just doesn’t look like this Paris trip changed much for the friendly exes.

Brad Pitt claimed his marriage to Jennifer Aniston had become a sham!

Brad Pitt claimed his marriage to Jennifer Aniston had become a sham!

In the wake of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s break-up, the rumors have started making the rounds about his link-up with his ex-wife Jennifer Aniston. While the fans can’t get over Brad-Angie’s fallout, some have already been wanting to see Brad-Jen rekindle their love affair. However, Brad has claimed that he became ‘dull’ during married life with Jennifer Aniston and that he wasn’t living an ‘interesting life’.

Jennifer Aniston

Thanks to Brad and Jennifer’s chemistry the couple dominated the headlines for years. The young love made their first formal appearance as a couple on the red carpet at the Emmy Awards in 1999. Taking their relationship ahead the two got hitched on July 29, 2000. Although, the couple started facing issues in their marriage and it seemed to fall apart as Angelina stepped into Brad’s life as the two started shooting for Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Soon, the power couple broke their ties in 2005 and the epic romance came to an end.

It wasn’t long enough when the world encountered Angie and Brad’s love.

Speaking to Parade, Brad cited that it was due to ‘not living an interesting life’ had led him to find comfort in the arms of Angelina. Brad said, “It became very clear to me that I was intent on trying to find a movie about an interesting life, but I wasn’t living an interesting life myself.” Further, he went on to say his marriage to Aniston had become a ‘sham’ and that he wanted more than what she could offer. Brad continued, “I think that my marriage had something to do with it. Trying to pretend the marriage was something that it wasn’t.”

In a pointed dig at the reason why he didn’t have children with Aniston, Brad said, “One of the greatest, smartest things I ever did was give my kids Angie as their mom. She is such a great mom.” The comment led to Brad having to issue a statement to clarify what he meant, after a huge backlash from Jennifer’s fans. Brad said in the statement, “It grieves me that this was interpreted this way. Jen is an incredibly giving, loving, and hilarious woman who remains my friend. It is an important relationship I value greatly.”

Brad eventually clarified his comments about the state of his marriage to Jennifer and looked to turn around his comments as a description of his own behavior with Jen. He said, “The point I was trying to make is not that Jen was dull, but that I was becoming dull to myself and that I am responsible for.”

Reports in the US media have suggested that Brad and Jen have been building bridges and their friendship has been growing again in the wake of Brad’s divorce from Angelina.

Adria Biles, Simone Biles’ Sister: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Adria Biles is the younger sister of Olympic gymnast Simone Biles. Like her superstar sibling, Adria Biles also competed in gymnastics at an elite level. Adria is about two years younger than Simone.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Adria Biles Competed at the Junior Elite Level as a Teenager

Simone Biles

Adria Biles got involved with gymnastics later than her older sister. According to Romper, Adria participated in her first competition when she was 9 years old. Simone had started in the sport when she was 6. As explained on her gym’s website, Simone visited a gym with her daycare center and “started copying other gymnasts in the back of the gym.” One of the coaches noticed her talent and encouraged her parents to sign her up for classes.

Adria Biles eventually followed Simone’s lead and, like her sister, had a lot of talent for the sport. The online magazine The Undefeated reported in 2016 that Adria was competing at the junior level.

She was competing at a Level 9 out of 10, as Simone Biles noted in an Instagram post from 2016 where she wrote, “good luck to my sister today competing at level 9 regionals! Sorry I can’t be there, but I’ll be cheering from here💗😚 love you sister.”

Adria reached level 9 in 2015, according to My Meet Scores. Based on her scores, it appears Adria’s best rotation was on the vault. The Dallas Morning News also reported in 2015 that Adria had reached level 9.

Simone Biles

Adria and Simone Biles are nearly two years apart in age. Simone was born in March 1997 and Adria was born in January 1999. But some fans say the two girls look like they could be twins, as Bustle and Access pointed out in 2016.

Adria stands about a head taller than her famous sister. Adria told ESPN that she is 5’2″ while Simone is just 4’8″.

But despite the height difference, Adria says she has often been mistaken for Simone. She explained to ESPN that during the 2016 Olympics in Rio, fans would get all excited to approach her because they thought she was Simone:

It’s been funny to watch her go from normal Simone to famous Simone. Even in Brazil, people came up to me every day thinking I was her. They’d ask for autographs and take pictures. And many times they didn’t speak English so I couldn’t explain that I wasn’t her. They’d just say, “Simone! Simone!” and finally I decided it was easier to just let them take a picture.

We do look alike, I’ll give them that. But I’m about 5-foot-2. Simone is 4-foot-8. I’m a good head taller than her. When we are side by side, people can definitely tell us apart.

3. Adria Was Only a Baby When She & Her Siblings Were Put in Foster Care

Simone Biles explained in her memoir “Courage to Soar” that her biological mother, Shanon Biles, struggled with alcohol and drugs. She said concerned neighbors contacted social services when Simone was three years old. In an excerpt published by Parade, Simone described eating cereal with water because there was no milk, and a stray cat being fed instead of the children.

Adria Biles and her three siblings, which included oldest sister Ashley and brother Tevin, were put into foster care in 2000. Adria was only about 1-year-old. But in a recent documentary for Facebook Watch, Adria said she recalls being very close with her older siblings, especially because they were all “so scared of what was going on.”

Their maternal grandfather, Ron Biles, initially took in all four children and brought them to Texas after learning they’d been put in foster care. (His wife, Nellie Biles, is Shanon Biles’ stepmother). But according to Simone’s autobiography, the siblings returned to Ohio after a few months because Ashley and Tevin wanted to be near Shanon and Ron Biles didn’t want the children to be separated from each other. But Shanon Biles never regained custody and they were put back in the foster care system.

When Simone was six and Adria was four, Ron and Nellie Biles formally adopted them. The two girls have referred to Ron and Nellie as Mom and Dad ever since. The Wall Street Journal reports Ashley and Tevin wanted to stay in Ohio. They were adopted by their great-aunt, who lived in Cleveland.

4. Adria Says Simone Has Always Been a Very Protective Big Sister
View this post on Instagram
A post shared by Simone Biles (@simonebiles)

In a recent documentary for Facebook Watch, Adria Biles described Simone as being a very protective big sister and Simone agreed with that sentiment. Simone said, “I wanted to take care of Adria obviously because she was the baby. I just felt like I needed to look out for her because if family doesn’t look out for you, who’s going to?”

Simone Biles

Nellie Biles added that Simone has always been “nurturing” and “motherly” toward Adria. She said they have a very close bond that has lasted for their entire lives.

Adria explained that when they were younger, she thought of Simone as “bossy.” But that now, she understands that Simone was trying to protect her. Adria also commented that she and Simone fought “all the time” as children, as sisters close in age are prone to do, but that Simone is her best friend.

In an op-ed for ESPN in 2016, Adria lavished her sister with praise:

Simone is as outgoing as she seems, and yes, she is always laughing. She’s also kind and humble, and I’m so proud to have her as my sister. I look up to her in every way.

5. Adria Biles Posted in 2020 That She Was in School for Dental Assisting
i’m in a program right now for dental assisting then i want to do hygiene

— Adria Biles (@adria_biles) February 13, 2020

Adria Biles turned 22 in January 2021. She is active on social media but keeps the details about her personal life to a minimum.

But in February 2020, she shared on Twitter that she was still in school. She tweeted, “school is so much fun when you’re doing what you’re interested in.” Someone asked her what she was doing and Adria responded, “I’m in a program right now for dental assisting then I want to do hygiene.”

Simone Biles

As for gymnastics, Adria appears to have stopped competing after she graduated from high school. In April 2021, Simone shared a link to a Telegraph article that claimed, “when a pair of siblings both played the same sport professionally, the younger one was more successful.” Simone tagged Adria and wrote, “uh oh @adria_biles you better get back in the gym sister.” Adria replied, “nahh that’s all you sister” and “not the case in this case.”

Phil Mickelson breaks down LIV Golf move, believes rival league will ‘do a lot of good for the game’

Phil Mickelson breaks down LIV Golf move, believes rival league will 'do a lot of good for the game'

The last time Phil Mickelson played a professional golf event was in Saudi Arabia at the beginning of February. He’s no longer physically in the country, but he is now one of its representatives in London and all over the world.

It was announced this week that Mickelson is part of the LIV Golf league and was undoubtedly paid a tremendous sum of money, even though he dominated the landscape of golf for his comments earlier this year about how the folks running LIV Golf — namely the Saudi Arabian government — are a bunch of “scary motherf——.”

Phil Mickelson

Mickelson hasn’t been seen since those comments emerged in February. He missed the Masters, and he skipped the opportunity to defend his PGA Championship. He insisted on Wednesday, in his first public appearance in four months, that he was allowed to play in both but personally chose to play in neither.

On Tuesday evening, his team, the Hy Flyers, drafted Chase Koepka, Justin Harding and Ratchanon “TK” Chantananuwat in the first-ever team draft for the event that begins on Thursday at 9 a.m. ET in London. On Wednesday, he faced a series of questions from the press covering the inaugural LIV Golf event.

Lefty was not brash with his answers, instead taking more time and thought with each one, especially when he was asked about the source of the funds for which he signed up. The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia is the financial arm of a Saudi Arabian government, whose human rights track record looks like most of Mickelson’s scorecards from the last few years (horrible marks all the way around).

See also  Roger Federer: 'Definitely top three in my life'

“I don’t condone human rights violations at all,” Mickelson said. “Nobody here does, throughout the world. I’m certainly aware of what’s happened with Jamal Khashoggi, and I think it’s terrible. I’ve also seen the good that the game of golf has done throughout history, and I believe that LIV Golf is going to do a lot of good for the game as well. I’m excited about this opportunity, and that’s why I’m here.”

Phil Mickelson

This has been a common theme among players who showed up to London. Graeme McDowell gave a similar answer on Tuesday, which was both disgusting and eye-opening as it relates to the real reason players are playing for the Saudi-backed league (money).

“We are golfers,” said McDowell. “Speaking personally, I really feel like golf is a force of good in the world. I just try to be a great role model to kids. I know what the game of golf has taught me. I love using the game of golf as something to kind of help grow around the world. That’s pretty much what we’ve been for the last 20 years, being role models for kids and try to use this game, like I say, as a force of good really.

“We are not politicians. I know you guys hate that expression, but we are really not, unfortunately. We are professional golfers. If Saudi Arabia wanted to use the game of golf as a way for them to get to where they want to be and they have the resources to accelerate that experience, I think we are proud to help them on that journey using the game of golf and the abilities that we have to help grow the sport and take them to where they want to be.”

In other words, they are paying exorbitant sums of money “as a way for them to get where they want to be.” McDowell actually said out loud that he was proud of that. To be clear, there has been no regime change in Saudi Arabia since Khashoggi was murdered. These are the exact same people.

Mickelson also refused to discuss whether he is or is not suspended by the PGA Tour, instead focusing on his time off from the sport.

“I’ve had a four-month break from the game that I’ve not had in over three decades,” Mickelson said. “I’ve had an opportunity to spend time with my wife, Amy, and spend time traveling to parts of the world, spend time at a place we have in Montana skiing and a hike in Sedona. It’s given me a time to continue some of the work and therapy in areas where I’m deficient in my life. It’s given me time to reflect what I want to do going forward and what’s best for me and what’s best for the people I care about.”

The other big issue he addressed was his gambling issue — which he recently disclosed to Bob Harig of Sports Illustrated had become “reckless and embarrassing” — and has been widely reported on and even speculated about regarding the reason for his jump to LIV Golf and a massive payday to begin with.

“I’ve been handling it for many years now,” Mickelson said. “Me and my family, we’ve been financially secure for — I can’t even remember for how long now. But it was certainly going to be threatened if I didn’t address this. And I did.”

Phil Mickelson

There were not as many fireworks as expected from the six-time major winner, but his presence alone at this event says it all. Though he has not resigned from the PGA Tour like several of his other colleagues and plans to play the U.S. Open next week, Mickelson lends a gravitas to LIV Golf that helps further its success and puts the PGA Tour in an extraordinarily difficult position. Lefty’s career has been full of moments when his mouth got ahead of his actions. This was certainly not one of them, but his actions — spearheading a league he has privately denigrated — said everything you need to know.

Tiger Woods reappears at the PNC Championship with his son Charlie

What many saw as something impossible is already a reality, Tiger Woods reappeared this Saturday in a professional golf tournament, in the first round of the PNC Championship, where he participates with his son Charlie in a competition that includes golfers teaming up with their children.

Tiger Woods

Woods appeared at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club Grande Lakes in Orlando aided by a buggy on the course, although he denied that he will use it to get around on the PGA Tour.

“I’m never going to use it in a PGA Tour tournament,” Tiger said prior to the start of the PNC Championship. “It’s a different tournament here. There are legends like Lee Trevino, who is over 80 years old, or Gary Player, who we wouldn’t be able to see if it wasn’t played with them. But if the offer came, I would turn it down. If I can’t, then I can’t.”

Attendees at the PNC Championship greeted Tiger with joy and excitement, following his terrible car accident last February, which left him with shattered legs.

For Tiger, his priority is his son
The Woods did well at the start of the tournament, with decent shots and highlights, such as a beautiful drive by Charlie, which his dad later sunk with a putt, although they are still far behind as they were in 13th place, still with time to make up positions, 36 holes they will go through between Saturday and Sunday, although Tiger knows he is far from the level required to compete like in the old days.

“I’m far from the level that a PGA Tour tournament requires. I have no stamina. I couldn’t even walk a course as flat as this one. It’s enough for me to be able to say I have my leg attached to me. This is going to take a long way. In which there are no days off and no goals. I don’t know how far I can go,” Woods said.

However, the priority for Tiger is only one, enjoying watching his son Charlie, whether it’s playing golf or just spending quality time together.

“He has a club speed that I didn’t have. Maybe I was taller at his age, but much leaner. Like a rail. Like a 1 iron. He has mimicked a lot of my mannerisms like sons do for fathers. Because I’m not really his coach, I’m his father. And I have to educate him that studies come first. If he asks me about golf stuff later, I’ll be there,” Woods added.
